The May 8th Where in the Conejo Contest photo was of the Western Plateau Trail

The Western Plateau Trail leads from Conejo Center Drive in Newbury Park down to Hawk Canyon in the Conejo Canyons Open Space, then up to the Western Plateau to make a big U-shaped loop, then back down to Hawk/Hill Canyons to end at the Hill Canyon Trail. From the map of the area you can see that this trail provides access to a number of other trails, all of which provide a great experience to visitors!
The Western Plateau is best visited in the spring or fall. It gets very hot in the summer, and when it rains in the winter, the trails turn to goop that builds up on hiking shoes and bike tires, leaving big holes and ruts that speed the erosion of the trail.
The Western Plateau Trail is an Edison Road for servicing the high-tension power lines that cross the Western Plateau. Some years ago the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA) negotiated with Edison to allow visitors to use the road to access the area. This is not something that Edison normally allows because their heavy trucks use these roads, and visitors on foot or riding might not be expecting them around a blind corner. Because COSCA persevered, we now have access to this great area!
